Who we are:

Below is a synopsis of my store, I refer to "our" and "we" frequently through out these web pages because I've been lucky to have excellent people in my employ with whom I trust my business, without them my business wouldn't be what it is today. This year will be my 34th year in the bike business, over 23 years here on the Cape. It feels like it was yesterday that we were pulling Campy Super Record derailleurs out of their blue boxes and marveling at how nice they would shift a 6 speed block, man how times have changed! I still get excited about the new equipment every year and can't wait for another season of riding, hopefully we can pass on to you some of our passion for the sport whether you're a seasoned rider or someone new to the sport.

I started as a mechanic at my brother Bill Sykes' store located in Plymouth, MA.  The road racing scene prevalent in New England dominated the early years of Corner Cycle in Plymouth, my brother's store was a haven for road racers so the roots of this store are still with road bikes.  During the '80s, the change to mountain bikes also saw me move to manage the "new Corner Cycle" in Falmouth.

Starting in 1986, Corner Cycle Cape Cod took over Full Cycle, a small retailer who had started in 1977.  After two  years as manager, I purchased the store and moved its location across the street to a larger storefront and incorporated the store as Corner Cycle Cape Cod Inc.

With the predominance of mountain bikes in the early '90s, Corner Cycle saw a change in the product mix to include more off road equipment and much less road gear.  The boom in mountain bike sales coincided with a growth in the popularity of Cape Cod, we had tons of people getting exposed to riding via mountain bikes .

Beginning somewhere around 1999 we started to see a resurgence in road bikes and higher end hybrids, this has drawn many riders from mountain bikes to the road.  We still see increases in road sales in the future and continue to see the road market growing.

Our junior racing team has grown steadily with more and more riders racing the road and cross. This year we have Luke Keough our two time National junior cyclocross champion as captain for the juniors. Joining Luke for his final year as junior is one of our long time riders, Emerson Oronte. We will be supporting a five rider Elite Junior program for 2008 plus a four rider Junior development squad. Our U23 program will continue in a reduced program due to the costs associated with entry fees and travel expense for the older riders. We will however have at least three of our riders returning to race in the U23 program including junior team member Lucas Fortini. Lucas will be joined by Morgan Hiller, Matt Barston, and returning member Pat Gougen. One of our earliest members of our junior and U23 program, Toby Marzot, will continue to race with the elite east coast regional program of Fiordifrutta, he should continue to climb his way to success in their program. Our 2007 U23 captain Jake Keough and his brother Nick will be riding for CRCA/Sakonnet Technologies national level program. A few of our other U23 riders have also moved on to regional programs Kevin Wolfson and Andrew Walters will be racing for the Somerville based IF team we wish them well in their continuing carreers.  Our multi time winner of the Verge cross series and road race tough guy, Jonny Bold, has bolstered the Masters program with the help of Mark Stotz, Dave Connery, Sam Morse, Kevin Hines, Ronny Jacobs, John Mosher, and youngster Jamie Tosca. 2007 turned out to be an incredible year for our riders Jonny won the Verge M35 series once again, Kevin won the M45 and was second in the M35, and John Mosher finished second in the M45. If the highlight to the year were Luke's victories in the Crank Brothers series, Verge series, and U19 Junior National Championships, the icing of the cake was his tenth place in his first World Cyclocross Championship. Unbelievable!

We offer over 30 years experience in proper fit and setup of either road, triathlon, or mountain bikes, we've been using the computerized Bikefitting.com fit system for over 3 years with excellent results. In order to provide custom sizing and fit we also use a custom built "size cycle", with this tool we are able to simulate the exact specifications of any bike. We also use the Bikecad program from Bikeforest for graphic representation of custom sized frames, visit them at www.bikeforest.com . We pride ourselves in the ability to diagnose problems customers may encounter, either mechanical or biomechanical.

So for all of you who had read this far, a note of change for me, my long time friend, mechanic, confidant, and all around good guy Sam Densmore has moved on to bigger adventures. Sammy has worked for me for over 9 years and had become a fixture here. I had the pleasure of teaching him to be one of the most respected bicycle guys in the area. He developed his own customers and gained the respect from the cycling community. Sam has decided to try the "other coast" and move to Portland, OR. He hopes to latch onto a small frame builder to hone his skills as a custom builder. I will surely miss Sam, our off-season conversations regarding just about every subject under the sun have been the highlights of the sometimes bleak Cape Cod winter. The Portland cycling community will be enriched when Sam arrives, how lucky they are.

Feel free to email us at bikewiz (at) cornercycle.com for advice, but please be patient, as it may take us a while to compile a thorough response.

Thanks,

George Sykes

Ride your bike, because, to quote my friend Steve Pucci, "you pedal like a cow"

and if you haven't noticed bovines are not noted peddlers.
